The year 2024 in spotlights

As the year draws to a close, it is time to look back and reflect on the past year. In 2024, we were very active and carried out various projects, both with our clients and in the open source community. Below, we have put together an overview of some of the year’s highlights. We hope you enjoy them as much as we liked working on them.

Academic anniversary

A noteworthy moment in the year that is drawing to a close was the 30th anniversary of the doctorate in physics in an interdisciplinary field of science and research, the then new cross-discipline of silicon micromechanics.

European AI act

The wellestablished CAIML Meetup, i.e. Cologne AI ML, in conjuction with the Cologne office of the commercial law firm Oppenhoff, was another highlight. The combination at this meeting comprised the legal aspect of the European AI law and a brilliant technical presentation of state space models as an alternative to transformation models.

Risk-based approach

The Regulatory Framework defines 4 levels of risk for AI systems (European Union, Digital Strategy website):

“The AI Act is the first-ever legal framework on AI, which addresses the risks of AI and positions Europe to play a leading role globally. The AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence) provides AI developers and deployers with clear requirements and obligations regarding specific uses of AI. At the same time, the regulation seeks to reduce administrative and financial burdens for business, in particular small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).”

3DEXPERIENCE Conference

At the 3DEXPERIENCE® Conference, leading technology companies and ambitious start-ups from various industries presented their data-driven product and service portfolios, as well as successful implementation approaches and strategies for tackling the challenges of the digital future. More than 900 customers and partners of Dassault Systèmes, as well as leading industry experts, presented proven methods for ensuring long-term competitiveness with forward-looking strategies.

Mentoring and community engagement

In parallel to our consulting and project work with our clients, we also believe it is very important to actively engage in knowledge building and transfer, as well as community building in the open source sector. In recent years, a very lively eco-scene has established itself in the Cologne region, to which we have been able to actively contribute (Python, barcamps, etc.) over the years. The active dialogue with other AI experts, data engineers and scientists, as well as the feedback from the individual protagonists, gives us a good sense of purpose to continue this pro bono work (CSR) in the future.
