High-performance CAE services with RS/6000

Venue

With 755,000 visitors, CeBIT 1995 set a new record. The trade show took place in Hanover at the CeBIT exhibition grounds.

“The use of computer-aided CAE tools in production shortens production times by reducing the number of prototypes and thus contributes to a significant cost reduction in overall development. Numerical calculations using the finite element method (FEM) are an effective tool for avoiding design errors as early as the draft phase, for designing components and parts and optimize them for specific applications.”

CeBIT and MS-Windows 95

On a Sunday morning, a long queue formed outside the entrance to the CeBIT exhibition grounds in Hanover. On 12 March 1995, over 1,500 visitors to the world’s largest computer trade fair were keen to hear from software guru Bill Gates about what information technology would look like in a decade’s time. The then 39-year-old Microsoft boss drew heavily on his marketing bag of tricks: in front of the trade fair visitors in Hanover, he screened once again the now legendary video presentation ‘Information at your fingertips 2005’, which he had already shown months earlier in Las Vegas to the specialist audience at the US computer show ‘Comdex 94’.

IBM

TCN was a booth partner of International Business Machines at CeBIT 1995. Successful CAE projects carried out with customers were showcased at the trade fair using IBM RS/6000 AIX workstations.

“As a renowned CAE systems provider and authorised IBM business partner, TCN CAE-Technologien+Systeme GmbH, Dortmund, has many years’ experience in the field of computer-aided design and finite element analysis. The range of services extends from pure client consultancy to a comprehensive service, with design, data conversion and FEM analysis provided from a single source throughout the project.”

TCN business partner of IBM

TCN’s tailored range of services enables even small and medium-sized enterprises to gain direct access to tried-and-tested calculation methods, state-of-the-art CAE tools and proven ‘simulation expertise’. Consequently, there is no need to maintain this cost-intensive technological infrastructure in-house.

Engaging an external calculation partner offers further significant business benefits, including development costs that can be calculated in advance, whilst simultaneously reducing economic and technical risks by eliminating the need for additional investment and the necessary training period.

FEM services

Key areas of numerical calculation TCN specialises in the following areas within the FEM field:

  • linear and non-linear strength problems
  • dynamic problems (modal analysis, transient behaviour)
  • heat transfer problems with fluid dynamics coupling (CFD)
  • coupled mechanical-thermal, piezoelectric problems (multiphysics)

Areas of application and target groups

Over the past few years, TCN has carried out a wide variety of projects in the automotive, mechanical engineering, construction, consumer goods, electronics, precision engineering, sensor technology (MEMS), manufacturing and plastics engineering sectors. Thanks to its numerous FEM calculation projects, TCN can draw on a wealth of experience in numerical simulation and optimisation.

Project work

The problem analysis is carried out in collaboration with the client, taking into account the technical constraints in order to achieve a cost-effective solution. Where possible, parameterised FEM models are created for automatic optimisation. If automation is not possible, manual parameter variations are carried out to gain insights into the behaviour of the structural element and to be able to assess it. Billing is either on a time-and-materials basis or at a fixed price.
